Deseret Cattle Feeders is seeking a knowledgeable and self-motivated Pen Rider to join our feed yard farm team.

Responsibilities:

  • Ride through cattle in pens and pasture daily, checking for animal health and pulling any compromised livestock.
  • Doctor animals as needed and become BQA Certified.
  • Confirm the cattle have adequate stock water and hay.
  • Set-up and maintain pasture fences to keep infrastructure in best shape possible.
  • Capture and put stray animals into their assigned pens or pasture.
  • Set up electric fences in the pastures around pivots for cattle to graze.
  • Help keep all fences, cow pens, facilities, and equipment neat, clean, and in good repair.
  • Input all animal treatments and statuses into computer system.
  • Process all cattle including shipping and receiving to ensure pen head counts are accurate.
  • Champion a culture of safety, towards animals and coworkers. Report all incidents in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and provide own horse.
  • Horsemanship – Safely and proficiently work cattle on horseback, while following animal husbandry/welfare best practices.
  • Able to gather cattle safely and efficiently in the pens/pasture and work cattle in corrals/pens, adhering to low-stress principles.
  • Strong demonstrated interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Proficient stockmanship skills with the drive to improve cowboy skills and cattle production knowledge.
  • Able to work long hours depending on the situation and time of the year, which may include some weekends/holidays.
  • Dependable with history of reliable attendance.
  • The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk or hear; kneel, crouch; climb or crawl. Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and is able to get on and off a horse with ease.
  • Willing and able to work outside in conditions including inclement weather, hot/cold temperatures, wind and in direct sunlight.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.50 – $23.30 per hour
