The North Carolina Forest Service is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.

This Position is located at Claridge State Nursery. The NC Forest Service nursery program produces over 40 different conifer and hardwood species with annual production total exceeding 15 million forest tree seedlings. These seedlings are available to all citizens of North Carolina. This position, along with other nursery team members, will aid in planting, maintaining, harvesting, and distributing these seedlings.

This Vehicle/Equipment Operator II position is responsible for the proper operation, calibration, and routine maintenance of a variety of land management equipment. Equipment will range from newer technologically advanced and highly specialized equipment, to older less advanced machines used in the production, harvesting and distribution of forest tree seedlings and/or maintenance of tree seed orchards, including but not limited to; lateral root pruners, undercutters, top clippers, multiple bed sprayers, seedling harvesters, and precision seeders. Other land management equipment includes: motor graders, rotary mowers, disc harrows, dump trucks, bull dozer, excavators, and box blades. This position will also be responsible for the maintenance, repairs, and operation of the Nursery’s irrigation system. This will include valve repairs, controller repairs, riser and sprinkler head repairs, irrigation setup and removal, and controller settings. This position will also be responsible for the application of a wide range of fumigants and pesticides. Seedling distribution vehicles will range from pickup trucks to 53′ refrigerated tractor trailers. This position will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment. Position provides training, oversight, and direction to seasonal contract labor and/or inmate crews. Employees must always adhere to all department safety policies and procedures.

Normal work schedule will be a 40-hour work week from Monday-Friday. Daily schedule will start at 7:30am-4:00pm with a 30- minute lunch break. During seasonal periods of planting and harvesting, work schedule will require extended working times. The extended work week will require long hours and occasional weekends. Overnight stays out of town are occasionally required as well.

Work environment includes exposures to adverse weather, forest pests, falling limbs, cramped conditions, extreme cold, intense heat, dust, and debris. Repeated heavy lifting required up to 100lbs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Possess a working knowledge of common farming practices.
Possess the skills to operate common farm tractors and equipment.
Ability to learn to operate highly specialized nursery machinery.
Possess excellent verbal communication skills to establish and maintain working relationships with fellow team members and the general public.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid NC Class A commercial driver’s license within 90 days of hiring
Must possess or have the ability to obtain a NC Public Pesticide Operator’s license within 90 days of hiring
Ability to repeatedly lift and move items of up to 100 lb.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
Experience in the use of pesticides.
Experience in agricultural practices
Experience in mechanics and welding
Experience in irrigation/plumbing
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience or a combination of both.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements- Must possess necessary licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.
