The Department of Animal Sciences Equine Science Center is seeking an Agricultural Assistant II. This position is based at the UF Equine Science Center in Marion County. This individual will be involved in the care of horses and assist with research data collection and other duties as assigned. The employee will perform routine maintenance on facilities and equipment and keep accurate records relating to expenditures, inventories, and maintenance logs.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform maintenance activities for all unit grounds, buildings and fences and the maintenance of farm equipment and farm vehicles
- Perform or assist with care, feeding and management of horses in accordance with University animal care and use guidelines
- Operate equipment used in delivering feed, mowing pastures, applying fertilizers and pesticides and producing hay. Operate state vehicle to carry out duties around farm unit.
- Assist with research projects including animal care, data collection and records management
- Assist with record keeping on horses, personnel and equipment as needed to meet program needs. Must have basic computer skills to be able to create equipment repair and maintenance records.
- Perform or assist with facility construction and farm improvement
- Supervise student labor as needed
Normal Work Schedule:
7:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. (40 hrs per week)
Some weekends and evenings required for animal care and production of hay.
Requires work outdoors in inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, dust, pollen).
This position will be considered an essential personnel position in emergency situations.
$17.75 per hour
This is a full time staff position that comes with a full benefits package . If eligible, employees can also receive tuition assistant through the Employee Education Program.
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Have horse-handling experience
Ability to operate tractor, mowers, chain saw and weed eater
Ability to keep accurate computerized records
Experience with hay field management and hay production
