But this year border closures to limit the spread of coronavirus may prevent them from making that journey. Until this year, Bartoszyce’s residents were part of a mass movement of seasonal workers from eastern Europe and north Africa to western Europe; each spring and summer, hundreds of thousands of people crossed international borders to pick crops, playing a vital role in the continent’s food chain.
