Southern Hills Orchard is seeking a highly technical Agronomist to provide the necessary expertise on areas such as nutrition, pest management, and irrigation to field foremen and managers in efforts of producing high yielding, high quality crops economically. The Agronomist position serves as both a project manager and scientist who identifies problems, creates solutions, and supports implementations through interdepartmental collaboration and vendors.
Responsibilities:
- Recommend products, timing and rates for crop nutrition and protection products. Write application prescriptions.
- Train and assist field foremen in monitoring irrigation timing and effectiveness (soil moisture monitoring, ET, pressure bomb, etc.).
- Monitor regulatory and prescription compliance on all crop input applications.
- Coordinate water orders with water supplier.
- Provide training to foremen, crew leads and scouts on pest scouting methods and identification.
- Coordinate harvesting to minimize quality losses from pests (diseases, insects, etc.)
- Learn vendors business to identify better purchasing strategies.
- Formulate ideas for improving cropping practices (follow through from idea to financial justification and execution if applicable.)
- Assist with development of capital and operational budgets.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Ag Science or equivalent related experience in agronomy (farming crops, pest control, farm equipment, GIS/GPS use, etc.)
- Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience with demonstrated strong leadership skills. Project Management experience a plus.
- Strong attention to detail, troubleshooting and multi-tasking skills
- Strong demonstrated interpersonal, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Certified Crop Advisor and Pest Control Advisor Licenses.
- Valid in-state driver’s license.
- Proficient computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office Products.
- Must be able to accommodate the regular farm schedule of 50+ hours per week, in addition to work nights and weekends, per business needs.
- Able to meet the physical requirements of the job and willing to work in outside weather conditions which includes hot, cold, and rain.
